ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 starts with a definition of a language test and a discussion of its main characteristics. It also presents a classification of vocabulary assessment techniques based on the information about the L2 learner’s lexical command that they produce. The chapter briefly examines three types of instruments applied in the evaluation of vocabulary: discrete-point tasks, integrative tasks and communicative tasks. It also reviews the most popular discrete-point test items used in education and SLA research for the assessment of L2 lexis.
