ABSTRACT

The field of performance art is already characterized by the theater and dance worlds as a territory that welcomes all slackers, dilettantes, "bad actors", and differently-bodied dancers, and the people are sad when workshop participants demonstrate that they might have a point. The ultimate objective in this territory is that each participant develops their own methodology. Participants need to understand that, although the workshop is an enjoyable experience and humor is a vital element in their work, they must also take the work and the process seriously. It is also important that both participants and instructors are given space to voice their thoughts and concerns about the sensitive nature of the material developed during certain exercises. If they are simply too stoned or drunk to partake in the exercises, the people will discreetly get them a cab and send them home to rest. The workshop itself provides a natural high, and there will be plenty of post-workshop playtime.
