ABSTRACT

The chief of biggest Native State in the cis-Sutlej territory, the Raja of Patiala, took a strongly pro-British stand, very unfortunate and traitorous. Jind Raja Sarup Singh remained in the forefront and helped the British with 800 men, horse and foot. He was the only chief who remained in the British camp in Delhi throughout the siege, and his men were in one of the columns at the time of the final assault. Sarup Singh joined the British camp at Alipur on 7 June and remained there until the 25th, when he had to return to his state where the rebels of the Hansi, Hisar and Rohtak districts incited the Jind villages to revolt. Sardar Bishan Singh of Tangaur behaved well during the rebellion of 1857 for the British and was forward in the supply of provisions for the troops at Delhi.
