ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to consider the various pathways IST can take depending on variables related to client situations, the therapist's work context, and personal characteristics of the therapist. Client variables of risk issues and mandated therapy are explored with an emphasis on importing standards of best practice into IST. The impact of the work context on the actual practice of IST is discussed, including some commentary on its application to case management and inpatient or residential programs. Lastly, the chapter proposes that the practice of IST allows for a unique developmental path for each therapist that is a function of their own style and preferences within IST, as well as their own pathway for the development of the person-of-the-therapist.
