ABSTRACT

Children from all over the world have one thing in common: they love to play games. In this chapter the author focuses on how children from New Zealand, China, Cameroon, Turkey, Sweden, Taiwan, Germany, Pakistan, Romania, the Philippines and the Democratic Republic of Congo play traditional games. When working in London, she used to hear a lot about the game Four Square from the children. This game was often brought over by Kiwi teachers. Many cultures enjoy games that typically are non-competitive. The emphasis is on communal spirit, shared fun and healthy exercise. Satisfaction comes through playing, not winning. Other cultures incorporate a more competitive spirit into their games. By the end of an exciting activity, a specific team or individual enjoys recognition as the winner. The author focuses on games such as, Four Square, Clap Ball, Korepe, Ambulance, Catch the Chicks, and so on.
