ABSTRACT

The singing and dancing games are mainly for young children, although in a mixed-age group they will usually find some of the older children joining in and enjoying the games too. The Hokey Cokey is the exception that can be played by any age child or adult. These games are sometimes referred to as ring games and are all accompanied by familiar songs and rhymes. Ring a Ring o’ Roses is the simplest of all these games and can be played by even the smallest children. The origins of the rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel are believed to date back to the 1700s. Oranges and Lemons is a very old game and rhyme which has been very loved by numerous generations of children all over the world. This chapter focuses on some of the singing and dancing games such as, The Farmer’s in His Den, Pop Goes the Weasel, and so on.
