ABSTRACT

All professional people working with others, whether as a coach, trainer, consultant, educator or facilitator, are well served by a thoughtfulness about their work. This chapter describes the various philosophies that people hold in mind as to the purpose and practice of learning. It describes the usefulness of each and the implications for the approach with clients. At its heart, coaching is about learning and change. An understanding of some of the philosophies of learning can provide a framework for coaches reflecting on how and why they do what they do in their professional practice. Newton described a range of Learning Imagoes taking into account that the purpose of learning can be different in different contexts and so the approach would also differ. Various learning and training needs will be best met by different approaches.
