ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses aspects to be considered during contracting. It describes the points to consider and questions that can invite useful conversation. The chapter describes the ways of noticing potential collusion between some of the role players and techniques of ensuring open communication between all role players. Contracting on all three levels of the administrative, professional and psychological aspects of a piece of coaching work is key to its success. There needs to be an explicit, shared understanding of all aspects of the work, especially on the more hidden level of assumptions and implied desires for what the work could or could not bring. Taking time to contract thoroughly on all three levels with all role players sets the foundation for powerful and ethical coaching.
