ABSTRACT

Holding the framework of the Permission Wheel very lightly and offering it as a way of considering the focus for the coaching conversation can be the impetus for the coachee to connect with what is really at the core of their desire to change. This chapter describes the practical application of using the Permission Wheel as a way to invite the coachee to choose a focus for the coaching work. When coachees seem to be unsure of what it is that they really want to work with, this model offers a useful framework to formulate a more specific goal for coaching. Upholding an empowering view of coaching that involves both parties being in their Adult ego states involves the coach being vigilant not to slip into a Parent mode and encourage the coachee by giving her permission – this invites the coachee to remain in their disempowered Child mode.
