ABSTRACT

This chapter describes five common myths that people often adhere to around the giving and receiving of strokes. The Stroking Profile is a useful tool for coachees to gain awareness about their patterns. Steiner described five mistaken beliefs that people hold about the giving and receiving of positive strokes. These are passed on to the developing child by the parents and cultural group and based on a scarcity myth – they are not true and can be changed. The brief sharing of the model of strokes and doing the Stroking Profile have created awareness and offered a scaffold for the coachee to understand something about the dynamics of his leadership style. The coaching continues with him being able to name and understand what the challenge is in his team dynamics and begin to work on thinking and behaving differently.
