ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Mindful Adult model as a springboard for describing that it is more a quality of being and an ongoing self-awareness using the Transactional Analysis (TA) frameworks, than just doing and talking TA, that is the powerful stimulus for awareness, change and ongoing learning in a coaching relationship. The Adult ego state is a present-centred and here-and-now way of thinking feeling and behaving, whereas the Parent and Child ego states are in the past. In original TA models, the Adult was considered the most desirable ego state from which to be in the world and was sometimes described as logical and an analytical. The Mindful Adult is a useful way of representing the qualities needed as a coach – being present and paying attention to all these aspects within us and between us and our a coachee.
