ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the textual and interpersonal elements of the research article genre. Focusing initially on a review of research on structure, sentence length, sentence type, markers of voice, and the use of past, present, and future forms, and verbal modality in English, French, and Spanish academic writing, this chapter makes clear the differences in writing practices across these languages. After discussing these linguistic items, evaluation, by way of writer stance and reader engagement, is considered, highlighting, in particular, relevant research on direct and indirect questions as reader-engaging metadiscourse. Overall, the aim of this chapter is to contextualise the writing of the research article genre and outline the analytical framework used to study direct and indirect questions as reader-engaging metadiscourse.
