ABSTRACT

This chapter draws attention to the important theoretical foundations of contrastive linguistics. It addresses the topic of contrastive linguistics by contextualising it historically, unpacking key theories underpinning it, such as the tertium comparationis and equivalence, and outlining its overlap with corpus linguistics and comparable corpora. In so doing, this chapter endeavours to draw connections between contrastive and corpus linguistics and outline key contrastive linguistic approaches in detail, in order to develop a framework for analysis that can address the extant issues in comparing academic discourse across languages.
