ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the theoretical discussion of academic metadiscourse and corpus-based contrastive linguistics. First, the data are discussed. This begins with a presentation of the English and French economics subcorpora from KIAP in order to demonstrate how this comparable corpus responds to the expectations of contrastive linguistics. Following this, the comparable Spanish economics corpus is presented. The process for the identification of questions within the data is then presented, indicating how direct and indirect questions were identified. Next, the analytical framework used is outlined. Overall, the goal of this chapter is to set up, in a replicable fashion, the analyses of questions as reader- engaging metadiscourse.
