ABSTRACT

This discussion chapter unpacks the findings of the two corpus-based contrastive analyses presented in previous chapters, with a view to further developing our understanding of questions and question function as reader engagement devices in English, French, and Spanish academic writing. Topics of question length, type and form, location, markers of voice, past, present, and future forms and verbal modality, and question sentence type are discussed in terms of their overall patterns of use and functional distribution. Overall, this chapter offers an in-depth discussion based on the analysis of questions in academic writing in three languages.
