ABSTRACT

The context in which supervision is delivered determines many of the possible ways that clinical supervision defines the role of the supervisor. The self-defined role of the supervisor and the expectations that arise from such a definition form the bases upon which the good supervisor functions. Effective mental health care somewhat naturally expresses the aspirational thinking and deeply felt goodwill of its providers. Genuinely, counselors and psychotherapists aspire to improve the lives of their clients. Individual uniqueness is unavoidably integrated into professional functioning. The effective management of this uniqueness is what differentiates a truly professional clinician or clinical supervisor from others, particularly when the practices and generally agreed upon evidence is blended with individual uniqueness. The philosophy of therapy and supervision held by the supervisor determines the role of the supervisor.
