ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 highlights issues that came to the fore regarding the role of the GP in midwifery services, including the declining role of the midwife in antenatal care and the role of the GP in home birth. The Working Party on Recruitment and Training 1949, the reintroduction of direct-entry midwifery training and the statutory refresher courses for midwives are highlighted. Pupil and practising midwives registers are examined. Recognition from the Minister of Health of the role of midwives is reducing. The role of the Guilleband, Cranbrook and Peel reports in moving towards 100% hospital birth to complete the obstetric dream is considered.
