ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 identifies previously unknown Tudor midwives, their husband’s occupation, their number of children and their home. Length of marriage, age at death and years of practice are among other issues described for the first time. Likewise, care given in pregnancy and labour, changing baptismal rates in rural parishes, midwife baptisms and a midwife’s care of a woman sentenced to be hanged demonstrate Tudor midwives’ care and compassion.
