ABSTRACT

Can better assessment design lead to better assessment security? This chapter reviews the evidence for a variety of commonly argued positions, including the effectiveness of different types of assessment like examinations and authentic assessment at improving assessment security. Some obvious but persistent mistakes in assessment design that weaken assessment security are explored, alongside recommendations on how to avoid them. The notion of programmatic assessment security is proposed, which involves focusing assessment security efforts on those assessments that matter the most at a degree level. Other approaches covered include invigilation, dialogic feedback, random audits, and the use of existing quality assurance processes.
