ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter sets the stage for what is to follow. It provides a rationale for using literature throughout all the disciplines taught in schools. Reasons include enhancing the learning of content; creating opportunities for challenging thought and discussion; enabling the teaching of content from multiple perspectives and lenses; and stimulating interest, motivation, and engagement so that students will want to read and learn in their various content area courses. The chapter also presents the promise of positive things happening when librarians and teachers collaborate, especially with the support and involvement of administrators and other school leaders.
