ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is the use of informational books throughout the disciplines. Part 1 gives a rationale and purposes for using this genre in our content area classes, and Part 2 explains and models strategies and activities, including Jigsaw II, using award acceptance speeches, retelling, reflective listening, and job shadowing via informational books. Literary field trips, travel journals, creative writing, inside-outside circles, and reading guides are also exemplified. Five author studies featuring respected writers of informational text are presented in Part 3. Part 4 consists of booktalks for books relating to curricular topics in several disciplines. The chapter concludes with a scenario depicting a school-wide celebration of International Dot Day, spearheaded and facilitated by the school librarian.
