ABSTRACT

Fiction is the focus genre of this chapter, with Part 1 giving the research support and rationale for the use of novels and other fictional texts in discipline-specific classes, and Part 2 demonstrating specific ways teachers can incorporate fiction in their instruction, such as You-Are-There reading, fanfiction, reading aloud, conducting a symbolism circle activity, using multimedia to strengthen decoding and fluency, comprehension guides, and anticipation guides. Six author studies follow in Part 3. Part 4 offers booktalks targeting students in various subject areas. Finally, there is a scenario showing a school following literary awards processes, with librarians, school leaders, teachers, staff, and students all enthusiastically involved.
