ABSTRACT

Biography, autobiography, and memoir are featured in this chapter. The why and how of using these connected genres in content area courses is addressed in the first section. Then Part 2 explains how strategies using trade books relating to real lives might play out in the classroom. Readers learn about scrapbook biographies; biography talk shows; the think-aloud procedure; time travel dialogues; biography wallpaper; creating a wax museum; creative dramatization; timeline and map marking; imaginary dialogues with people in biographies; and the use of reading guides of various sorts. Five author studies are presented in Part 3, and Part 4 consists once again of booktalks for dozens of books that are rich with curricular connections. The chapter ends with a scenario envisioning school leaders, librarians, teachers, and students celebrating Ada Lovelace Day in ways that make sense in particular disciplinary classrooms.
