ABSTRACT

We now come to poetry—yes, poetry across the curriculum. A rationale and scholarly examples of the practice of using poetry in the disciplines come in Part 1, while strategies and activities are modeled in the following section. These include investigating intertextuality; responding to novels in verse with poems; using objects to stimulate writing poetry related to curriculum; poetic dramatic monologues; poetry slams; odes in the disciplines; biopoems; and found poems. Studies of seven poets are offered in Part 3. Part 4 provides booktalks for poetry trade books that can be used in disciplinary courses for instruction, engagement, and enjoyment. A concluding scenario shows a librarian leading a school-wide celebration of curriculum-related poetry.
