ABSTRACT

The final genre chapter promotes the use of hands-on and how-to books in all classrooms as well as the library, which may contain a makerspace. Benefits of project-based learning are discussed in Part 1, and strategies follow as Part 2 shows teachers helping students to discover their genius; try out jobs; role play; get an overview of a book; experience the K-W-L-S strategy; participate in an inside-outside circle; and complete reading guides that could help comprehension and further thinking. Four authors who are known for their interactive texts are featured in Part 3. Part 4 contains numerous booktalks for interactive books and texts promoting action learning and hands-on experimentation. A concluding scenario offers a picture of students guiding families and community members through a makerspace and into hallways and classrooms to show projects exemplifying their learning.
