ABSTRACT

People often have difficulty noticing small changes in their environment. Incrementalism (the “slippery slope”) can cause us to miss small degradations in our moral standards or moral actions. The next thing we know, we are doing things that we never imagined we would do. Incrementalism has been tied to many ethical failures, including several major business scandals. Indeed, most major embezzlements and securities frauds started small, but grew over time.
