ABSTRACT

Dr. Mary Gentile believes that most people have good values and wish to stand up for them, and “that if enough of us felt empowered – and were skillful and practiced enough – to voice and act on our values effectively on those occasions when our best selves are in the driver’s seat, business would be in a different place.” Her book, Giving Voice to Values: How To Speak Your Mind When You Know What’s Right (which has been turned into an 8-video series at Ethicsunwrapped.utexas.edu) sets forth a program based on “Seven Pillars” that is designed to enable people to stand up for their values more often and more effectively. The overall emphasis is on actual rehearsal, prescripting, and advanced action planning because it is difficult to be ethical on the fly.
