ABSTRACT

Moral reasoning is difficult stuff. Most people think that they are better at it than they actually are. Indeed, substantial evidence shows that we make most of our moral judgments instinctively and nearly automatically, without much actual logical reasoning going on. Our moral judgments are heavily influenced by many factors that we often are largely unaware of, and these hidden factors often cause us to make moral judgments that we cannot logically defend. Values that we unconsciously adhere to often play a larger role in the moral conclusions we draw than does any reasoning process.
