ABSTRACT

People tend to be obedient to authority. It feels good to please the boss. Such obedience can help organizations run smoothly, too. But what if the boss asks her employees to do something wrongful? Stanley Milgram’s famous experiment shows how prevalent this tendency is, and how it operates. Often, people will comply with their supervisor’s instruction, even though they realize that they are being asked to do something wrong, because they fear the consequences if they do not comply. Other times, subordinates are so focused on pleasing their supervisor that they do not even realize the unethical dimensions of what they are being asked to do.
