ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the foundations upon which our multisensory rooms are built, foundations in history dating back to the old institutions, and foundations in practice with the early Snoezelen rooms and the later multisensory rooms. It looks at the knowledge foundations upon which multisensory room practice is based. The book finds a bundle of ideas for alternative sensory spaces, big and small, together with advice on things to consider when enabling access to a sensory space and when resourcing that space with equipment. It looks at the most important piece of the kit in a multisensory room: the people. The book describes a conversation intended to tackle that taboo. It examines empower us to enhance practice in our multisensory room or alternative sensory space.
