ABSTRACT

The New Minority, which includes the de-classed white working class and the lower-educated middle class, is in full revolt against the system – both economically and culturally. As victims of globalization and the opening of borders (particularly immigration and outsourcing), members of the New Minority seek to turn back the clock and return to an idealized time when society was much more homogenous and the welfare state guaranteed a decent living for themselves and their offspring. They form the heart of Donald Trump’s or Marine Le Pen’s electorates, but also that of some centre-left parties in Central and South Eastern Europe.
