ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the key areas within mise en scene as being – setting, costume and make-up, props, and the positioning of characters and objects within the frame. Mise en scene is a French term that refers to a series of elements of film construction that can be seen within the frame of the individual shot. Perhaps the most obvious and all-encompassing of these is setting. Vertigo is technically a sensation of losing film studies students' balance, or dizziness, rather than a fear of heights, which is known as acrophobia. The type of film – animation, documentary, or fictional film of whatever genre – does not matter: setting will always be important and will always work to provide us with indications as to what we can expect to find in the film. Pan-Africanism is an ideology that advocates unity and solidarity between all people of African descent.
