ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the pros and cons of costly signaling. It is customary for outstanding individuals to use costly signals to demonstrate their superiority; however, as noted by Amotz and Avishag Zahavi (1997), the practice of showing off (or what they call the “handicap principle”) can be burdensome. Marianne displays strong sentiment, even though Willoughby has chosen Miss Grey. Elinor and Edward ignore their feelings to do their duty. On the other hand, instead of displaying costly signals, Colonel Brandon is an elusive character, a protector of the poor, and a friend of fallen woman. His compassion and helping efforts bring great benefits to him and the Dashwood sisters, even though he has no intention of letting his kindness handicap him.
