ABSTRACT

In a rigorous classroom, our expectations set the stage for the learning experience. If we communicate lowered expectancies, students will be reluctant to attempt to learn at higher levels. This chapter looks at five aspects of high expectations. These are: behaviors that reflect high expectations; ensuring rigor in instructional expectations; deeper levels of thinking; projects and project- and problem-based learning; and Genius Hour. Teachers’ beliefs, reflected in actions, demonstrate their expectations for their students. In other words, teachers treat students differently dependent on “expectancy,” or what they expect. Genius Hour is a way to enhance problem-based learning, and is inspired by Google’s efforts with their employees, where 20% of employees’ time is motivated by passion and curiosity.
