ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses data literacy and proficiency as the unifying theme of the concepts. It refers to the ability to leverage the vast quantities of internal and external data to improve an organization’s efficiency, effectiveness, and agility. The chapter provides an introduction to data, data management, and data issues from a managerial perspective. It also provides a starting point to enable managers to understand the value of data and data management, the key data/data management concepts and terminologies, the manager’s role in data management, and examples of common data management platforms and vendors. The growing value and power in data also brings with it great and ever-growing risks. The vast amounts of data emanating from business operations are of little value if they are not used to improve operational and strategic decisions. Business analytics is a subset of business intelligence that focuses on predictive analytics.
