ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a basic introduction to key internet of things (IoT) concepts, functioning, use cases, and opportunities and threats. The internet of everything extends the IoT by connecting people, processes, data, and things. The industrial internet of things, also known as the industrial internet, is essentially the extension and use of the internet of things in industrial sectors and applications. Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are systems in which integrations of digital and physical things and processes enable the digital management of physical processes and environments. CPS are able to dynamically sense, adapt to, and manage changes in a physical process and in process’ settings in real time. Smart workplaces combine concepts like smart buildings, the internet of things, cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence, and other technologies with design and workflow management concepts to optimize the efficiency, effectiveness, and attraction of work settings.
