ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the design, use, and optimization of information systems and applications that can sense, comprehend, and recommend or take action. The design and use of such digital technologies and concepts are collectively referred to as artificial intelligence (AI). AI technologies and related concepts offer organizations significant efficiency opportunities, significant effectiveness opportunities, significant product and business model innovation opportunities, significant scalability opportunities, and significant adaptability and agility opportunities. The chapter introduces high-level AI and machine learning concepts and interpretation, modeling, and learning and prediction tools and concepts that underpin the “intelligence” in AI. The chapter identifies some of the key AI-related issues and risks. Readers will get a high-level understanding of AI and machine learning and of the interpretation, modeling, and learning and prediction tools and concepts underpinning AI. This will enable them to pursue self-directed follow-on learning with confidence so they can keep up with evolving AI developments and applications.
