ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how digital technology advancements cause digital disruption, the types of disruption created, the threats of not responding to this disruption effectively and in a timely manner, the types of game-changing opportunities presented by digital technology advancements, and how organizations can leverage digital technology advancements to both adapt to disruption and seize the game-changing opportunities that digital technology advancements present. Digital disruption is often discussed from the perspective of incumbent organizations that are heavily invested in established ways of doing things, and whose established way of operating is interrupted or made irrelevant. The introduction of new digital technologies or breakthroughs in existing digital technologies results in three types of disruptions: disruption of consumer or customer expectations and behaviors, disruption of the competitive landscape, and disruption of available data.
