ABSTRACT

The word “Oahspe” is taken from the Panic language, from the ancient civilization of Pan, which sank into the Pacific Ocean twenty-four thousand years ago. Oahspe contends that modern languages are derived from the Panic language. The Universal Faithists of Kosmon is the major Oahspe organization. It was established in California, but moved to Utah in the 1970’s. An earlier Oahspe group was the Essenes of Kosmon which was founded by Wing Anderson in 1932 in North Salt Lake City. The Essenes had centers in North Salt Lake and in Montrose, Colorado. The Eloists were founded by Walter DeVoe in 1918. He was active in the New Thought movement which taught “new methods of self-improvement through right thinking, and through (the) modification of orthodox Christian beliefs. The original Oahspe manuscript was either destroyed by a flood in El Paso, Texas, or it may have been destroyed by Newbrough’s daughter who did not believe in it.
