ABSTRACT
In which we connect internal critiques of academic psychology with attempts by academics, professionals and political activists to speak out against abuses of power in the discipline. We move on from attempts to change the subject to the mobilisation of psychologists against war, and to the formation of radical support activities, protests that link psychology with politics and even to resistance. I describe in this chapter initiatives some of us were able to take while still teaching approaches to psychology that we were very sceptical about. These were initiatives which drew on alternative theoretical approaches, which responded to institutional problems that bedevil academic work and which were prompted by events that forced us to take a stand. Running through this chapter is an attempt to link theory with practice, to go beyond academic psychology. You will see how attempts to go beyond psychology need to tackle deep assumptions about the nature of knowledge that mainstream positivist research methods encourage us to adopt, even invite us to apply to social and political phenomena well beyond the discipline.
