ABSTRACT

In this chapter, teachers, parents and children give us their perceptions and experiences of transitions. We discuss the importance of Year 1 teachers understanding the profile judgements made at the end of Reception and knowing that children who did not achieve a Good Level of Development may have met the expected standards in reading, writing and mathematics. We recommend that, where possible, Reception teachers support Year 1 colleagues with the first week’s planning as they know the children, their interests and abilities. We recognise that periods of change can be hard for parents as well as children and in order for transitions to be successful, there should be a shared approach from everybody involved.
