ABSTRACT

This Intermezzo section describes the site-specific play, Izithombe 2094. Modelled on a walking tour, the play used fictional tour guide characters played by professional actors to lead audiences (whether joining at the beginning of the tour or along the way) through the suburbs of Bertrams, Lorentzville and Judith’s Paarl in Johannesburg. On the route there were various performances by local participants as well as the professional members of the cast. The play was the culmination of a year-long participatory public art project in the area using theatre and performance methods to explore everyday practices towards making the specificity of place in these three suburbs in their 2016 moment.
