ABSTRACT

Relationships are a critical component of effective teaching. Connecting with students sets the foundation for everything that follows. All teachers have numerous students who come to us needing so many things besides educational skills. This chapter divides classroom management into three basic components. They are relationships, expectations, and consistency. Relationships are relationships with students. They are the foundation of everything in the classroom. Expectations are based on appropriate and engaging lessons from the teacher, and clear communication about what is expected from the students. Consistency means that we have engaging lessons and follow through on expecting and enforcing appropriate behavior from students on a daily basis. Great teachers are highly aware that building, establishing, and maintaining relationships is an essential part of teaching and sets an important foundation. Unfortunately, teaching is complicated, and highly effective teachers are well aware that they have to have strong relationships with students, have appropriate and engaging lessons, and do these things on consistent basis.
