ABSTRACT

Swingler and Bush organise the Festival of Music for the People, for which Swingler writes a Music and the People pageant starring Paul Robeson. Britten uses texts by Swingler and Auden for his Ballad of Heroes, premiered at the festival. Swingler joins Daily Worker as a sub-editor, then as literary editor. When war is declared, he writes Sandbag Follies for Unity Theatre.
