ABSTRACT

This chapter presents findings on Nepalese students’ or alumni’s social, cultural, and political experiences while studying in China and at the Kathmandu University Confucius Institute (CIKU) in Nepal. In social terms, safety and security in China and Chinese people’s traits were especially highlighted, while the dark spots in interviewees’ experiences, such as racism, also surfaced. And cultural familiarity with China rather than cultural consumption defined their experiences in China. Finally, China’s political condition was more favorably reported in their narratives, especially in comparison with how democracy operates in Nepal.
