ABSTRACT

Islam holds up higher ethics and manners as an ideal to its followers. Ethics are integral to the Islamic way of business and trade. The Prophet Mohammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) was the best model as regards his pious conduct and good manners. He enjoined his followers to adopt the highly developed qualities of good character: aiding people in need, a benevolent attitude, generous dealing when selling, truthful speech, keeping promises and treating people gently. In this chapter, the importance of ethics and ideal behaviour as enjoined by Islam for a successful and beneficial way of business and trade is discussed. The most crucial and Divine ideals such as truthfulness, honesty in dealings, disclosing defects in commodities, not using the resources wastefully, trust, fulfilment of promises, contentment, altruism, judicious pricing, forgiving and overlooking others’ mistakes, and unburdening the burdened, are explained in detail. Finally, this chapter also discusses the various conditions that are necessary for valid sale transactions.
