ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the case study, which seeks to depict the character of resistance in an Ensel Lower school during 1992-3. Ensel Lower School is situated in the inner suburbs of a town in the Midlands of England. Collaboration is a complex issue and has many aspects. In broad terms, one might expect that in cultures marked by compliant and retreatist modes of adaptation, contrived collegiality might prevail. With resistance and appropriation, characterized by strong self-determination and accord on values, genuine collaboration of some kind might be more likely. There was considerable agreement among them, suggesting that the collaboration was strong at the basic and most important level - that of ideas. The cultivation of relationships and the quality of interaction between teacher and pupils is of central concern. The quality derives from knowledge of one's children gained from their observation and from knowledge of what they are doing.
