ABSTRACT

At the heart of any degree in sport development lies the voluntary sector. This chapter attempts to outline the definitions, conceptualisations, and scope of volunteering in the sector. It also will introduce students to government policy in sport development on volunteering and new strategic visions for the sector. It also introduces and explains a model for volunteering in the UK sport development context. Finally, the chapter goes on to look at the use of volunteers to deliver mass participation in golf and the work of NGBs with volunteers to achieve policy outcomes in a case study on England Golf.
