ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the study of sport development and how we may do this from three overlapping spheres of organisations, policies, and practices. It defines, gives examples for, and maps out what is meant by each category rather than assuming students know what these are. In this sense, this is a clear and simple bridging chapter into the later parts of the book where it is explained what organisations are, what is meant by policy in the scope of this textbook, and what sport development practices constitute. Overarching, it provides some of the theoretical foundations of starting to study sport development at university.
