ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at what communication is, including possible definitions of communication, the process of communication, ways of communicating, and types of communications. It examines what the sport event and broader media literatures have studied regarding the media. This included what the media are, how media work, media representation, the impact of the media, and regulations and restrictions pertaining to the media. From a practitioner’s standpoint, the chapter focuses on how the media operate during major sports events, including the different types of media and the different locations media work in. It provides some considerations associated with managing the media, such as what types of services and tools they need to do their job, ways to ensure positive coverage of the Games beyond the traditional, and why organising committees often place major restrictions on their staff and volunteers.
